How Much Does It Cost to Empty a Septic Tank in Pretoria?

Pretoria · Centurion · Midrand. Free, no-obligation request: a vetted local septic operator calls you to confirm the price and a time.

The short answer

Emptying a typical 3,000 litre septic tank in Pretoria costs about R2,300 to R3,300, going by one quote broker's published estimate (VAT not stated). A Gauteng operator advertises R2,500 excluding VAT for tanks up to 5,000 litres. Your quote depends on tank size and access, and that same operator adds 30 to 50% for weekend or after-hours work.

What moves the price

What pushes the price up or down?

Five things set what a pump-out costs. The first one matters most.

  • Tank size in litres. One Gauteng operator calls tank capacity "the primary cost driver". Houses with five or more bedrooms often have 8,000 to 10,000 litre tanks, according to the same operator, and those are usually quoted separately from the standard rate.
  • Access. The suction hose has a limited reach. The same operator charges a surcharge when the tank is more than 30 metres from road access. A cover buried under paving adds time too.
  • Distance. Some operators charge per kilometre beyond their normal service area. A smallholding at the far end of a gravel road may pay for the trip.
  • Urgency. The same Gauteng operator adds 30 to 50% to its standard rate for weekend and after-hours work. That's one operator's figure, not a market-wide rate.
  • Volume, loads and difficulty. The charge can depend on the total volume removed, the number of loads and how difficult the contents are to pump. Sludge build-up doesn't make the tank hold more.
Sourced price ranges

What do published prices actually say?

These are the published figures we could find and check, each with its source and date. None is a Pretoria operator's own price list, and the sources disagree with each other in places. Use them as a sense check, not a quote. Your quote depends on tank size and access.

Two things to notice. The Pretoria range is for a 3,000 litre tank, so a bigger tank sits higher. And only the operator's figure says anything about VAT (it excludes it), so ask whether your quote includes VAT before you compare it with anything on this page.

Septic vs conservancy over a year

Septic tank or conservancy tank: which costs more to run?

A septic tank is cheaper to keep running, by a long way. The reason is plumbing, not pricing: a septic tank lets the settled wastewater soak away through a French drain and only needs the sludge pumped out now and then. A conservancy tank is sealed, so every litre the house uses stays in the tank until a truck takes it away.

A septic tank in Pretoria (our arithmetic): take one Gauteng operator's guidance of a pump-out every 12 to 18 months and the broker's R2,300 to R3,300 for a 3,000 litre tank. That works out to roughly R1,500 to R3,300 a year. Your tank may need pumping more or less often.

A conservancy tank: the yearly cost is the price per load times the number of loads. A Cape Town ratepayers' association describes a 5,000 litre conservancy tank that is cleaned every month. That's one example, not a household rule, but it shows the scale: twelve loads a year against one septic pump-out every year or so.

Pretoria and Centurion conservancy emptying prices weren't published anywhere we could check, so ask for a per-load price. In Johannesburg, which covers most of Midrand, the by-law has the council collecting conservancy tank contents on a schedule, with fees based on the quantity removed. More on that on the conservancy tanks page.

Paying a fair price

How do you avoid overpaying for a pump-out?

Most pump-out disputes are about litres. These habits keep the number clear.

  1. Know your tank size. Check the building plans, an old slip or the tank cover. If you don't know, say so and ask the operator to tell you what they find.
  2. Ask for a per-litre or per-load price upfront, and whether it includes VAT, travel and disposal.
  3. Check the slip before you sign. If the litres are well above your tank size, ask how the volume was measured. Note any disagreement on the slip and keep a photo of it.
  4. Book before it's urgent. One Gauteng operator's after-hours premium is 30 to 50%, which makes booking early the easiest saving there is.
  5. Ask about shared trips. If neighbours on your road are also due, ask whether one visit for several tanks changes the price.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to empty a septic tank in South Africa?

Kandua's national guide puts a professional pump-out at R1,500 to R3,000. A quote broker's estimates for a 3,000 litre tank run from R2,200 to R3,200 on the East Rand to R2,800 to R3,800 in Cape Town, with Pretoria at R2,300 to R3,300. Neither states VAT. Your quote depends on tank size and access.

Does the price include VAT?

Ask, because published prices vary. The Kempton Park operator's figure of R2,500 for tanks up to 5,000 litres excludes VAT. The broker estimates and the national guide don't say either way.

Why does an after-hours pump-out cost more?

The operator is sending a truck and crew outside normal hours. One Gauteng operator says weekend and after-hours requests add 30 to 50% to its standard rate. If the drains still run, a weekday booking is cheaper.

Why does my slip show more litres than my tank holds?

Sometimes the tank is bigger than you thought, or more than one load was needed. Ask the operator how the volume was measured before you sign. If you still disagree, note it on the slip and keep a photo.

Is a conservancy tank cheaper than a septic tank?

To run, no. A conservancy tank holds everything and is emptied far more often. One Cape Town example is a 5,000 litre tank emptied monthly, which means paying for twelve loads a year. A Pretoria septic tank on a 12 to 18 month cycle works out to roughly R1,500 to R3,300 a year (our arithmetic).

Can you give me a fixed price?

No. This site is an independent information and request service and doesn't set prices. We pass your request on. A vetted local septic operator in your area calls you to confirm the price and a time.
