How much does it cost to empty a septic tank in South Africa?+
A quote broker's price guide puts a Pretoria pump-out at R2,300 to R3,300 for a 3,000 litre tank. A Gauteng operator advertises R2,500 excluding VAT for homes with tanks up to 5,000 litres, and a national cost guide gives R1,500 to R3,000. Your quote depends on tank size and access. More in our cost guide.
How often should a septic tank be cleaned out?+
It depends on sludge and scum build-up, tank size and household use, so ask the operator to assess your tank. Published intervals differ: one Gauteng operator's guidance is every 12 to 18 months under normal use, while a national cost guide, a tank manufacturer and the US EPA all say every 3 to 5 years. A big family on a small tank sits at the short end. If nobody knows when it was last pumped, arrange an inspection and ask whether pumping is needed. More in our septic tank pumping guide.
What are the signs that my septic tank is full?+
Bad smells around the drains or outside, slow drains, toilets that take long to flush, and soggy patches near the tank. Sewage backing up into the house means it's past full. See septic tank problems.
When should I book a pump-out?+
Before it overflows, not after. One Pretoria operator says to pump when bad smells appear or toilets drain more slowly than normal. For conservancy tanks, a ratepayers' group advises booking at least a week before the tank will be full.
Can I clean my own septic tank?+
Not the emptying. In Tshwane, the Sanitation By-laws say anyone carting sewage must be authorised and must offload it at a facility allowed to accept it. Waste removal also needs a licence under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act. Keeping chemicals out and the drain field clear is the part you can do.
How much does a septic tank cost in South Africa?+
A national cost guide gives R7,000 to R15,000 for a 1,700 to 2,500 litre plastic tank on its own, and R25,000 to R70,000 for a typical installed system. Your quote depends on tank size, soil and access. See septic tank installation.
Do I need council approval to install a septic tank?+
Yes. Tshwane requires the City's prior written consent to build, install or operate a septic tank. Johannesburg, which covers most of Midrand, requires the Council's prior written permission. The design must meet SANS 10400-P, the national drainage standard.
What's the difference between a septic tank and a conservancy tank?+
A septic tank lets solids settle and bacteria break them down, then sends the liquid to a French drain. A conservancy tank is sealed: it holds everything until a truck empties it, so it needs emptying far more often. See conservancy tanks.
Is it normal for a septic tank to refill after pumping?+
Yes. A working septic tank sits full to its outlet level, so refilling with wastewater after a pump-out is normal. Refilling alone doesn't mean the French drain has failed. Continued backups, effluent surfacing or an abnormally high level need an assessment of the inlet, outlet, tank and drain area.
Is it my septic tank or my French drain?+
Often only an operator can tell. If the drains were slow, the tank was pumped, and they're slow again within weeks, a US septic guide says to look downstream at the drain field. Soggy ground over the drain area points the same way. See French drains and soakaways.
Do additives like Ridex work?+
We don't sell, rate or recommend any product. The US EPA's 2024 fact sheet says additives are "not recommended for domestic wastewater treatment", because a working system already has the bacteria and enzymes it needs. It adds that some products may interfere with the breakdown of waste.
Is vinegar safe for a septic tank?+
We couldn't find reliable guidance, South African or otherwise, that says vinegar helps or harms a septic tank. The EPA's general advice is to avoid large volumes of harsh cleaners and chemical drain openers, and to keep up regular pumping.
What should never go into a septic tank?+
The EPA's list includes wipes, cooking grease, coffee grounds, cat litter, paper towels, medicines, oil-based paint and solvents. Only human waste and toilet paper should go in.
How close must the truck get to my tank?+
It depends on the operator's truck. One Pretoria operator asks for access to the manhole within 30 metres of the truck, with suction hoses that reach up to 35 metres; that's its access condition, not a rule for every truck. In Tshwane, owners with a conservancy tank must provide a hardened roadway and gates at least 3.5 metres wide where the truck has to drive onto the property.
How do I know I wasn't overcharged on volume?+
Ask for a slip that shows the litres pumped, and compare it with your tank's size. If the volume is well above what the tank holds, ask how it was measured, and note any disagreement on the slip.
Do you empty septic tanks yourselves?+
No. This site is an independent information and request service. We pass your request on. A vetted local septic operator in your area calls you to confirm the price and a time. See about this site.
